How We Ranked the States

Rankings are based on gold production data and placer deposit density published by the U.S. Geological Survey and cross-referenced with active mining claim records from the Bureau of Land Management. States ranked #1-#10 are established producers with significant public land access for recreational panning. States ranked #41-#50 have limited known placer deposits but gold has been documented there – sometimes in surprising quantities.

Gold distribution across the United States is more widespread than most people expect. According to the USGS, gold has been found in 32 of the 50 states, with the majority of commercial production concentrated in Nevada, Alaska, and California. For recreational panners, production volume matters less than public land access – a lower-ranked state with open BLM land can outperform a top producer where most ground is claimed or restricted.

For official public land access information visit the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. For geological data on gold deposits by state visit the U.S. Geological Survey.
